Denver Newspapers Quote Coalition President!!

Dear Parents and Friends of Online Schools:

We're continuing to assess the recommendations of the legislative audit released yesterday, and we will have a response to these recommendations later this week.  However, we want to keep you apprised of all that's happening with the recently released audit and the press reports on it.

Lori Cooney, president of our coalition, talked to the Rocky about some of our perspectives, which are included in this article http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/education/article/0,1299,DRMN_957_5207364,00.html.  You'll also see Lori and her lovely daughter Ashlyn in this photo accompanying this article:  http://www.denverpost.com/ci_4822852.  In addition, the Rocky Mountain News published an editorial on the audit: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/editorials/article/0,2777,DRMN_23964_5206776,00.html.

Please take time to read some of these articles and remember, when you call a radio program, write a letter to the editor, or talk to a legislator who will be reviewing this audit, make sure you remind them of the following:

-- How well your online school is working for you and your child(ren).

-- How much you value the relationship with your teacher and the impact this audit and any likely legislation will have on that relationship and our school.  Our teachers are well trained and help our children learn they skills they need to excel.  You can tell them how much more you know your online teacher than you knew your child(ren)'s teacher in a traditional brick and mortar school.

-- Remind them that your traditional online school is a PUBLIC school and should be treated fairly.  Don't punish schools that are working well.

-- Our schools are accountable. They're accountable to us, as parents. If we don't think the school is working, we can leave.   Our teachers are certified. We're counted in attendance and our kids take state tests.

-- On funding, we already receive less money than other schools. The legislature shouldn't cut funding for our schools.

If you have any questions, send us a note and we'll help you.  Stay tuned for more updates!
